Some eligibility requirements apply, but most residential properties in England and Wales meet the requirements.

Q. What does the "air-to-air" grant cover? 

The air-to-air grants cover air-to-air heat pumps - commonly known as "air con". These use wall-mounted fan units to blow hot air in winter, and cool air in summer. 

Q. When will these grants be available?f

Unfortunately these grants for air-to-air (or "air con") systems are not available yet.

Although the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has officially offered the air-to-air grants since April 2026, the  Microgeneration Scheme (MCS) and UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) are still working to certify products and finalise the installation standards. The most recent update from MCS was in September 2026. 

Note: No installers UK-wide are currently able to get the air-to-air grants.  Based on progress so far, we don't expect the grants to be available until Spring 2027 or later. 

Q. What are the conditions of the grant? 

  1. The system must be designed to heat the entire house AND
  2. You must also remove your existing fossil fuel (gas, oil, LPG) or direct-electric heating system. 

This means you'll need to budget for an indoor wall-mounted fan unit in every "habitable" room, such as bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms. 

Q. Can I just get cooling for my master bedroom? 

You can pay outright for an air-to-air heat pump / air conditioning that will cool between one and five rooms. However, you'll only get the grant if you have an air-to-air system that can heat the whole house. 

If you just want cooling in summer in up to 5 rooms, it's normally cheaper to do it without trying to meet the eligibility requirements for the £2,500 air-to-air grant. 

Q. What's the drawback of getting air-to-air? 

Air-to-air systems generally don't heat hot water for your taps, showers and baths, so you'll also need to budget for an alternative water heater, such as a Sunamp Thermino (which we install). 

Q. When does it make sense to get air-to-air? 

If you already have radiators and/or underfloor heating, it's almost always cheaper to keep that and get an air-to-water heat pump, so that you can benefit from the £7,500 grant. 

Getting air-to-air for your whole home (in order to get the £2,500 grant) might make sense if:

  • You're in a flat or a smaller house (eg. up to 2 bedrooms)
  • You don't currently have radiators or underfloor heating
  • You're using electric heating (eg electric radiators) or portable heaters
  • You're already using an immersion heater in a hot water cylinder to heat your hot water

Am I eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Most properties are eligible, and we’ll always confirm before you commit. The main criteria are:

  • The property must be in England or Wales.
  • It can be a house, flat, or commercial building (shop, office, restaurant).
  • The existing heating system must be fossil fuel (gas, oil, LPG, coal) or direct-electric heating (storage heaters, electric panel heaters, or electric boilers).
  • The property owner must apply (it’s fine if you have a mortgage).
    • Landlords can apply for rental properties. If you’re a tenant, we’ll need to speak to your landlord as well.
  • Self-build homes – where you’re building the property for yourself – are eligible if they’ve never had a heating system installed.
  • Social housing and shared-ownership (part-buy / part-rent) properties aren’t eligible — there are separate schemes for those.

There are a couple of other conditions:

  • We need to remove the existing heating system (such as your gas boiler or electric heaters). However, we can usually reuse the existing radiators and pipework.
  • You can’t keep a fossil fuel heater alongside the heat pump as a backup, as these “hybrid” systems aren’t eligible. But don’t worry – we’ll design your heat pump system to be powerful enough to keep your house warm on the coldest days with no backup needed.

What you’ll need before applying

Before applying for the grant, we need to provide the Boiler Upgrade Scheme with details of your current heating system. This can be photos of the existing system, an energy bill showing gas or oil usage, or an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that’s less than 10 years old. We’ll advise you on the evidence we need to provide.

Sometimes an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) will recommend improvements such as loft or cavity wall insulation. You don’t need to complete these before installing a heat pump, but adding insulation can improve efficiency and lower your bills. We’ll discuss what’s worthwhile when designing your heating system.

What types of heat pump are eligible?

Air-to-water heat pumps are systems that heat water for your radiators, underfloor heating, and hot water taps and showers. They are eligible for a £7,500 grant for most homes. If you currently heat your home with oil or Liquidified Petroleum Gas (LPG), the grant is increased to £9,000. 
 

Air-to-air (A2A) heat pumps are more commonly known as air conditioning units. But the grants are not yet available. See above for further details on air-to-air grants.
