The process

How do I switch to an air-source heat pump?

There’s a few steps to getting your first heat pump, and it’s not as easy as simply swapping out your gas or oil boiler. But our team will make sure it’s done right and with the least disruption possible to you.

Steps to switching

01 Get an initial estimate

Simply enter your home address and we’ll look up the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your home to estimate the size of heat pump you’ll need. If you don’t have an EPC, we’ll ask a few questions about your house.

02 We’ll call you to discuss your requirements

Or simply call us directly on 02080 50 40 30.

Based on the information in your EPC, we’ll identify the size of heat pump that you’re likely to need, and give you an initial estimate of cost. We’ll also check that there’s space outside for the heat pump and space inside your home for a hot water tank (cylinder) or a space-saving SunAmp Thermino (which takes around 50% as much space as a cylinder).

You can ask as many questions as you like – we’ll explain everything as clearly as we can, without a load of technical jargon.

03 We’ll visit your house to measure up

We need to calculate how quickly your home loses heat to the outside world. We’ll measure up each room in your house, and take note of the material used for doors, windows, walls, the floor and roof. We’ll also measure up the area outside where your heat pump will go, and the space inside for a hot water cylinder or space-saving SunAmp Thermino. Then we’ll give you a final and lock-in quote, so you know exactly what to expect.

04 We’ll design your new heating system

Based on the survey and your preferences, we’ll design the ideal heat pump system for your home. We’ll prioritise your comfort, so (in line with best practice) we design the heat pump to keep your house at 21ºC* even on the coldest days of the year. We’ll then optimise the design to make it as efficient as possible – typically 3-4 times more energy efficient than a gas boiler or oil boiler.

* Want it warmer than 21ºC? No problem – just let us know.

05 We’ll apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on your behalf

Through the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can get a £7,500 grant towards your installation.

Because we’re an MCS-certified installer, we apply for the grant on your behalf and handle all the admin — so you simply pay the difference above £7,500.

06 We’ll install your heat pump

At a time that’s convenient for you, one of our friendly installation teams will arrive to install your new heat pump system. We will:

  • Protect your home and make sure any pets and children are safe
  • Prepare a firm base for your heat pump in the space that you agreed, and then install the heat pump unit itself
  • Fit the hot water cylinder (tank) or SunAmp Thermino in the agreed space, along with a number of components needed to make the whole system work (including pumps, controllers and expansion tanks)
  • Remove your gas boiler and safely cap off your gas pipe (unless you’re still using gas for cooking)
  • Show you how to use your new heat pump controller and app
  • Tidy up and leave your home the way we found it

07 Getting used to your heat pump

Our team will explain how to use and control your heat pump before they leave your home. The main difference is that heat pumps work best when they run “slow and steady”, producing consistent warmth. Unlike a gas boiler, you no longer need to play with the thermostat like a yo-yo to stay warm.

If you have any questions after we’ve left, or something isn’t working the way you expected it to, we’re available at any time to help.
